Requirements
Bachelor
A completed upper secondary education equivalent to Swedish gymnasium, with subject specific prerequisites set by each program. English proficiency equivalent to English 6.
Master
A bachelor's degree, normally at least 180 ECTS credits, in a relevant field, with prerequisites set by each program. English proficiency equivalent to English 6, generally IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5, or TOEFL iBT total 90.
Documents
Passport copy, degree certificates and transcripts, proof of English proficiency, and, for non-EU/EEA applicants, proof of application fee payment. Some programs, including those at the Umea Institute of Design, ask for a portfolio. All documents are uploaded to universityadmissions.se.
How to apply
- Check the entry requirements for the chosen program on Umea University's own program pages.
- Apply through universityadmissions.se before the 15 January deadline for autumn entry (1 March for the Master's Programme in Fine Arts).
- Pay the SEK 900 application fee, if required, and upload supporting documents by 1 February.
- Check the selection results, published 30 March for master's programs and 6 April for bachelor's programs.
- Accept the offer on the portal and, if a fee paying student, pay the first tuition installment.
- Apply for a Swedish residence permit for studies once tuition is paid or a scholarship is confirmed.
English test waiver
Umea University does not set its own IELTS or TOEFL minimum on its tuition or key dates pages. It follows the national English 6 standard applied through universityadmissions.se.
