Ghent University Admission Requirements 2027

Ghent University, founded in 1817, has 50,936 students, 7,577 of them international, and 69 English-taught master's programmes; its bachelor's degrees in Ghent are taught in Dutch. Non-EEA master's students pay EUR 2,297.40 or EUR 7,079.40 a year in 2026-27 depending on the faculty, against EUR 1,181.40 for EEA students, and there is no application fee. Applicants who need a visa apply before 1 April.

English test waiver

Ghent requires English at CEFR B2 on enrolment for most master's programmes taught in English. On its own table B2 means IELTS Academic 6.0 overall, PTE Academic 59 to 75, Cambridge B2 First, Trinity ISE Digital 80 or Oxford Test of English Advanced 111 to 140. TOEFL iBT is now quoted on the new 1 to 6 scale introduced on 21 January 2026, where Ghent asks for at least 4 to 4.5; its conversion table places that band at 72 to 94 on the old scale, so no single old-scale TOEFL number is recorded here. Individual programmes set higher bars in a published list: Geology asks for TOEFL 90 or IELTS 7, Biomedical Engineering for TOEFL 92 or IELTS 6.5, Photonics Engineering for TOEFL 87 or IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each part, and the English tracks in Linguistics and Literature for C1. The test is waived for a secondary diploma from Belgium's Flemish, French or German-speaking Community, a Flemish higher education degree, or at least 60 credits already completed in an English-language programme in a Lisbon Recognition Convention country, the European Higher Education Area or the United States. An English-taught degree from elsewhere does not waive it.
