Requirements

Bachelor

General admission requirement: a passed matura examination, a final examination completed before 1 June 1995 after an appropriate four-year secondary programme, or a vocational matura in a field relevant to the chosen programme (the exact accepted vocational fields and any extra matura subject required are listed per programme, for example Physics and Astrophysics requires an additional matura subject in Mathematics or Physics for vocational-matura applicants). Equivalent completed foreign secondary education is also accepted, subject to the recognition of education procedure. For programmes taught in English, such as Physics and Astrophysics, UNG's own call for enrolment states a general minimum English level of CEFR B2.

Master

Admission is based on a relevant completed bachelor's degree, with specific requirements, any bridging or additional courses, and selection criteria set individually by each School's study programme committee. Some programmes, for example Engineering and Management and Media Arts and Practices, are offered in English as well as Slovene, and set their own minimum English level.

Doctoral (PhD)

Admission is based on a relevant completed master's degree or an internationally recognised equivalent, assessed by the Graduate School's programme committee for each doctoral programme (Cognitive Science of Language, Cultural Heritage Studies, Environmental Sciences, Humanities, Karstology, Materials, Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology, and Physics). Doctoral tuition for the 2026/2027 academic year is a flat 4,000 euro per year for all programmes for students who are charged tuition.

Documents

For the recognition of a foreign secondary or higher education certificate, which is submitted together with the enrolment application on the eVS portal, UNG's own page lists:

• An uncertified copy of the education certificate for which recognition is requested.
• A court-certified translation of that certificate into Slovenian or English (candidates submit a translation only if requested).
• Annual report cards, transcripts, a diploma supplement or other evidence of the content and duration of the education.
• A short chronological description of the applicant's entire education, prepared and signed by the certificate holder or their legal representative.
• An ID card (optional). For the bachelor's application itself, UNG's 'how to apply' page adds a motivation letter and CV as obligatory attachments alongside the certificate, translation, transcripts and education summary. Certificates must be legalised for use abroad, either with an apostille under the 1961 Hague Convention or under the Authentication of Documents in International Traffic Act, depending on the issuing country. Applicants from a country the EU classifies as higher migration risk must also attend a mandatory interview and pay the associated fee described in the process below.

How to apply

1. Choose a study programme from the relevant School and check that School's own call for enrolment for the 2026/2027 academic year, including the number of available places and, where relevant, the required English level.
2. Apply electronically through Slovenia's national eVS web portal (portal.evs.gov.si) within the application round published for your citizenship group; non-EU citizens outside the bilateral-agreement and equal-treatment countries (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland) apply under a separate, generally earlier set of rounds than EU applicants.
3. Submit the required certificates, translations, transcripts and education summary directly through the eVS portal; this same application also starts UNG's recognition-of-foreign-education procedure, which by law must be decided within two months of a complete application.
4. If you are a citizen of a country the EU classifies as higher migration risk, complete the mandatory admission interview (contact details are sent to the email address given in the application) and pay the associated interview fee.
5. Wait to be notified by email whether you have been offered a place.
6. If offered a place, enrol at the UNG Student Office (in Nova Gorica or Vipava) with your application form, required attachments, and proof of the UNG fee and tuition fee payment (if tuition applies to you); enrolment for later application rounds must be completed no later than 30 September.
7. Studies begin around 1 October.

English test waiver

UNG's own call-for-enrolment page for the Physics and Astrophysics bachelor's programme, which is taught in Slovene and English, states: 'The general minimum level of English language skills required is B2 (in accordance with CEFR).' No IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo score was found stated on UNG's own pages for this or its other English-taught programmes (Environment, Engineering and Management, Digital Arts and Practices, Media Arts and Practices, Materials Science and several doctoral programmes at the Graduate School); the university states the CEFR level required rather than equivalence tables of external test scores. Applicants should check the specific programme's own admission page, since 'not all programmes have courses available in English language' and the minimum level requirement is stated per programme rather than as one university-wide policy page.
