Study in Slovenia: Admission, Cost, Visa and Scholarships (2027)

Slovenia's main university, the University of Ljubljana, teaches most of its programmes in Slovenian, and many bachelor's programmes such as Medicine, Law and Pharmacy require B2 Slovenian. English-taught options are concentrated at master's level, where many programmes are delivered in Slovenian and English, and at the School of Economics and Business, which runs a bachelor's degree in Business and Economics in English.

Fees depend on nationality and faculty. Citizens of non-EU countries with which Slovenia has no bilateral agreement pay tuition, while citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Serbia are exempt. Each faculty publishes its own price list. For 2026-27 the English-taught Business and Economics bachelor's costs EUR 3,400 a year, International Business at master's level EUR 4,700, International Relations EUR 4,000, and Computer and Information Science EUR 14,700, the highest figure in the English price lists.

The calendar starts early for non-EU applicants. For 2026-27 the first application period for bachelor's study ran from 18 February to 18 March 2026, applicants were told their selection results by 28 August, and a second period followed on 2 and 3 September. Master's deadlines are set by each faculty, with 10 September as the fallback where no date is given; the Faculty of Computer and Information Science closed on 30 June 2026.

English requirements are also set per faculty. The School of Economics and Business asks for CEFR B2 for its bachelor's, giving TOEFL iBT 72 to 93 as an example, and TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6 or Cambridge B2 for its masters.

A degree student from outside the EU applies for a temporary residence permit for the purpose of study, not a visa, at a Slovenian embassy or consulate abroad, or at an administrative unit if already legally in Slovenia; the university can file on the student's behalf. The permit is issued for the length of study but for no longer than a year at a time, and the authority must decide within 30 days of a complete application, or 60 in special cases, with study permits handled as a priority. Students must show monthly means of at least the basic minimum income, EUR 507.43 from 1 April 2026, and health insurance covering at least emergency care. They may work through a student service without a work permit, and graduates of the last two years can get a nine-month permit to look for work.
