Requirements
Bachelor
A secondary qualification recognised as giving access to university-level study, meeting the chosen programme's own subject prerequisites. English-taught programmes require IELTS Academic 6.0 (Faculty of Law: 7.0) or TOEFL iBT 80 to 100 depending on faculty, unless exempt. Numerus fixus programmes add a selection procedure with a fixed number of places.
Master
A relevant bachelor's degree meeting the specific master's programme's own grade, subject and, for some programmes, English-level requirements.
Documents
Diploma and transcript of secondary (and, where relevant, higher) education, certified translation if not in Dutch or English, a passport copy, and an English test certificate no more than two years old unless exempt. All documents must be uploaded to the Progress Portal in the correct format before the deadline; an incomplete file is not processed.
How to apply
- Register in Studielink for your chosen bachelor's or master's programme and pay the EUR 100 application fee if you hold a non-Dutch qualification.
- Complete RUG's Online Application System (OAS) and upload every requested document to the Progress Portal before the deadline.
- Numerus fixus applicants complete any additional selection steps by 15 January.
- If admitted and from outside the EU/EEA, apply for a residence permit for study with RUG as your recognised sponsor; non-EU/EEA applicants have until 1 June to submit outstanding documents for a September start.
- Pay the tuition invoice and arrange housing and health insurance before enrolling.
English test waiver
Native speakers who completed full secondary education, or a full bachelor's degree of at least three years, in the USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia or English-speaking Canada are exempt. Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency are accepted with no expiry; IELTS, TOEFL and Pearson PTE results must be no more than two years old. The Faculty of Law asks for a higher IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 100; Spatial Sciences and Religion, Culture and Society accept TOEFL 80.
