Netherlands Student Visa (2027): Requirements, Proof of Funds, Fee, Processing Time

What you need

Applicants for a residence permit for study at a university or university of applied sciences generally need:

1. An offer of admission from a Dutch institution recognised by the IND as a recognised sponsor; only the institution, not the student, can submit this application.
2. Proof of sufficient means of support, at least EUR 1,130.77 a month for higher education study (valid 1 January to 31 December 2026), shown through a scholarship, a loan agreement, or the income of a sponsor in the Netherlands if someone else is financing the studies.
3. A valid passport.
4. Proof of full-time enrolment; once studying, at least 50 percent of that year's study credits must be obtained to keep the permit.
5. A tuberculosis test after arrival for applicants from countries the Dutch government lists as requiring one, unless exempt.
6. Health insurance valid in the Netherlands from the date of entry.

How to apply

1. Apply to a Dutch university or university of applied sciences and receive an offer of admission; the institution must be an IND-recognised sponsor.
2. The institution, as your sponsor, submits the residence permit application to the IND on your behalf; students cannot apply to the IND directly.
3. Show proof of sufficient means of support for the length of your studies, most often at least EUR 1,130.77 a month for higher education.
4. Wait for the IND's decision, due within 60 days by law; the IND groups many students into set collection days shortly before the academic year starts.
5. If you need an entry visa (MVV) to travel to the Netherlands, collect it from the Dutch embassy or consulate in your home country once the application is approved.
6. After arrival, collect your residence permit card at the time and location the IND assigns, and register your address with the municipality.
7. Keep at least 50 percent of your study credits each year and stay enrolled full-time to keep the permit valid for its full term, which runs for the length of study plus three months, up to five years.

Why applications are refused

The IND can refuse an application if the sponsoring institution is not a recognised sponsor, if proof of sufficient means of support does not reach the required monthly amount for the full period of study, if the applicant is not enrolled full-time, or if documents are incomplete, inconsistent or fraudulent. An applicant who poses a risk to public order or national security can also be refused. An existing student who does not obtain at least 50 percent of their study credits in a year, or who stops meeting the enrolment or funding conditions, risks the permit being withdrawn or not renewed rather than facing a fresh refusal decision.
