Admission at a glance

The University of Geneva (UNIGE) is one of Switzerland's largest public universities and charges a flat semester fee of CHF 500 to every student, Swiss or international, making it one of the least expensive Swiss universities researched for this file. Bachelor's teaching is mainly in French, and a non-Francophone applicant, someone who did not complete their prior schooling in French, generally must pass the French test UNIGE's admissions department organises, alongside academic conditions that vary by country of origin and certificate type: required average grades range from no minimum up to 80 percent of the maximum mark depending on the diploma. Applicants must show six subjects studied across the final three years of secondary school: first and second language, mathematics, a natural science, a humanities or social science subject, and one further elective. Many applicants must also pass the ECUS exam once the diploma conditions are met, and some nationalities must additionally show they have been admitted to a recognised university in their home country in the same subject.

Master's programmes admit directly against a relevant bachelor's degree and programme-specific conditions, which for competitive programmes commonly include a research proposal, statement of purpose or references. English requirements are set by each programme rather than by one central UNIGE policy: the Global Health and Global Studies master's programmes ask for CEFR C1 (TOEFL iBT 100, IELTS 7.0), while the Master of Science in Economics accepts a lower band (TOEFL 95 to 120, IELTS 6.5 to 7.5) unless the applicant's prior degree was taught entirely in English. UNIGE's general registration deadlines run to 30 April for the autumn semester, or 28 February for candidates who need a Swiss entry visa, though some faculties, the Geneva School of Economics and Management among them, run their own earlier window.

Bachelor

• A recognised general-education secondary school diploma covering six required subjects across the final three years: first language, second language, mathematics, a natural science, a humanities/social science subject, and one elective from a defined list.
• Minimum grade average requirements that vary by country and diploma type, from none up to 80 percent of the maximum mark.
• A French test organised by UNIGE's admissions department, with exemptions for some nationalities and prior schooling; graduates of certain non-Francophone European systems (Italy, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Malta among them) are named as needing it.
• The ECUS exam for many applicants once diploma conditions are met, and, for some nationalities, proof of admission to a recognised university at home in the same subject.

Master
