Admission at a glance

The University of Lausanne (UNIL) teaches predominantly in French and charges every student the same semester fee, currently around CHF 580, rather than adding a separate rate for international students, though a candidate applying with a foreign secondary school diploma or foreign bachelor's degree pays a one-time CHF 200 administrative fee to have that qualification assessed. Admission at bachelor's level requires a secondary school diploma UNIL considers equivalent to the Swiss Maturity certificate; UNIL's own immatriculation service (UNIL IMMAT) publishes country-specific conditions and processes applications through directives covering registration conditions (Directive 3.1) and taxes and deadlines (Directive 3.2).

Master's applicants need a bachelor's degree, or another university degree, UNIL recognises as equivalent, and language requirements depend on the specific programme: for a French-taught programme, C1 French is the general standard UNIL cites for its own Master's Grant scholarship; for an English-taught programme, HEC Lausanne's own published table, used here as representative of the standard applied across UNIL's English-taught master's programmes, sets IELTS Academic 7.0, TOEFL iBT 100, or an equivalent Cambridge grade, with the certificate no more than two years old. UNIL runs registration in cycles tied to the semester: for the autumn semester, the general deadline is around 30 April, with an earlier cutoff around 28 February for candidates who will need a Swiss entry visa. UNIL's own site shows registration for a semester as closed once its window has passed, with the following semester's registration opening around four months ahead of it, so a prospective applicant should check the current status directly before assuming a date.

Requirements

Bachelor

  • A foreign secondary school diploma UNIL considers equivalent to the Swiss Maturity certificate, assessed against country-specific conditions UNIL IMMAT publishes.
  • CEFR B2 to C1 French, since bachelor's teaching is predominantly in French.
  • Registration within UNIL's published window: around 1 to 28 February for candidates needing a Swiss entry visa, or to 30 April for those who do not, for the autumn semester.

Master

  • A bachelor's degree, or other university degree, UNIL recognises as equivalent to a Swiss bachelor's; some programmes set additional subject prerequisites.
  • For French-taught programmes: C1 French. For English-taught programmes: an English test such as IELTS Academic 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 100 (the HEC Lausanne standard, used here as representative of UNIL's general English-taught master's requirement), certificate no more than 2 years old.
  • Registration within the same general window as bachelor's admission, with variation by programme; check the specific master's own FAQ for its language-level requirement.
