Requirements

Bachelor

• A recognised general-education secondary school diploma covering six required subjects across the final three years: first language, second language, mathematics, a natural science, a humanities/social science subject, and one elective from a defined list.
• Minimum grade average requirements that vary by country and diploma type, from none up to 80 percent of the maximum mark.
• A French test organised by UNIGE's admissions department, with exemptions for some nationalities and prior schooling; graduates of certain non-Francophone European systems (Italy, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Malta among them) are named as needing it.
• The ECUS exam for many applicants once diploma conditions are met, and, for some nationalities, proof of admission to a recognised university at home in the same subject.

Master

• A relevant bachelor's degree; programme-specific conditions that can include a research proposal, statement of purpose and academic references.
• For French-taught programmes: proof of French proficiency.
• For English-taught programmes: an English test score set by the individual programme, commonly in a CEFR B2 to C1 range (examples: TOEFL iBT 100 / IELTS 7.0 for Global Health and Global Studies; TOEFL 95-120 / IELTS 6.5-7.5 for the MSc in Economics), waived for applicants whose prior degree was taught entirely in English.

Documents

Secondary school certificate and transcripts (bachelor) or bachelor's degree certificate and transcripts (master), with certified translations where not in French; proof of the French test result or exemption (bachelor); for master applicants, a CV, and where the programme asks for them, a research proposal, statement of purpose and academic references; and proof of the required language test result for the programme applied to.

How to apply

1. Check the admission conditions for your diploma and country on UNIGE's registration conditions page, including whether the French test or ECUS exam applies to you.
2. Prepare transcripts, certificates and any required language test.
3. Register online through UNIGE's immatriculations portal within the published window: general deadline 30 April for the autumn semester, or 28 February if you will need a Swiss entry visa (some faculties, including the Geneva School of Economics and Management, run their own earlier window).
4. Pay the CHF 500 semester fee once registered.
5. Use the registration confirmation to apply for the Swiss national student visa if required.
6. Complete enrolment formalities after arrival.

English test waiver

UNIGE's central registration rules do not set one university-wide English level; each master's programme sets its own. The Global Health and Global Studies master's programmes ask for CEFR C1 (TOEFL iBT internet-test 100, paper-test 600, computer-based 250; IELTS 7.0; or Cambridge CPE grade A to C), used here as the representative figure, while the Master of Science in Economics accepts a lower band (TOEFL 95 to 120, IELTS 6.5 to 7.5, or Cambridge C1 Advanced). Applicants whose prior degree was taught entirely in English, or who are native speakers, are commonly exempt; check the specific programme page.
