Admission at a glance

Unitec Institute of Technology teaches from campuses in Mount Albert and Waitakere in Auckland and is New Zealand's largest institute of technology. Since 1 January 2026, Unitec and Manukau Institute of Technology have operated as a single legal entity, Manukau Institute of Technology and Unitec, formed when the government disestablished the former Te Pukenga umbrella and re-established ten independent regional polytechnics; students still deal with Unitec's own brand, campuses and admissions pages, which is why this record and the separate Manukau Institute of Technology record are kept apart. International bachelor tuition published for 2027 runs from about NZD 27,207 a year for the Bachelor of Business (Management and Marketing) to NZD 31,983 for the Bachelor of Nursing, including GST and the Student Services Fee but not health insurance or other levies. Admission requires evidence of English proficiency unless exempt, following the sector-wide NZQA English language rule: an IELTS Academic score of 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5 is the standard, illustrated on the Bachelor of Architectural Studies page, though some programmes such as nursing set a higher bar. Unitec runs a standard two-semester calendar in 2027, Semester 1 from 15 February to 28 June and Semester 2 from 12 July to 22 November, and processes applications programme by programme without one universal closing date across the institute; individual programmes such as the Bachelor of Nursing publish their own cut-off. Applicants work through an eight-step process: choosing a programme, checking entry requirements, applying online or through an agent, submitting certified documents, receiving an offer, paying fees, applying for a visa and insurance, and preparing to travel.
