Admission at a glance

JKU sets a much earlier application window for non-EU/EEA and non-equivalent third-country applicants than for EU/EEA citizens: to start in the winter semester, non-EU applicants apply from 6 February to 31 March of the same year, and to start in the summer semester, from 6 September to 31 October of the previous year. This applies to both bachelor's/diploma and master's programmes. For summer semester 2027 entry, the non-EU window is 6 September to 31 October 2026; the winter semester 2026/27 non-EU window (6 February to 31 March 2026) has already closed. EU/EEA citizens apply later, from the beginning of July for winter or January for summer, up to 5 September or 5 February, with an exceptional-cases extension to 31 October or 31 March. JKU states plainly that there is no fee to submit an application for admission, on both the bachelor's/diploma and master's admission pages. Applicants must provide a certificate of general university entrance qualification proving completed secondary education recognised in their home country, and a number of countries, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Nepal and Afghanistan, face extra scrutiny of the qualifying institution. German-taught programmes need a German certificate at A2 level at application, not older than two years; English-taught degree programmes do not require German proficiency before starting, but do require English proficiency, commonly IELTS 6.5 (6.5 in each skill) or TOEFL iBT 88 (22 in each skill, or 5 overall on the new scale from January 2026).

Requirements

Bachelor and diploma

A certificate of general university entrance qualification confirming completed secondary education that is recognised for higher education access; a number of countries, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Nepal and Afghanistan, need extra verification of the issuing institution. German-taught programmes need a German certificate at A2, not older than two years, at the time of application. English-taught programmes need an English certificate instead (IELTS 6.5 with 6.5 in each skill, or TOEFL iBT 88 with 22 in each skill).

Master

A completed bachelor's degree recognised as giving entry to the field. Non-EU/EEA applicants apply well ahead of the semester, on the same schedule as bachelor's applicants. Language requirement follows the programme's language of instruction, on the same German A2 / English test basis as bachelor's admission.

PhD

A completed master's degree or equivalent and admission to a doctoral programme; JKU accepts doctoral applications year round with no fixed deadline.
