Scholarships to Study in Taiwan (2027) for International Students

Taiwan admits international students university by university, with September and February entries and rounds that open almost a year ahead. Programmes are taught in Mandarin or English, and the certificate follows the programme: Chinese at CEFR A2 or English at CEFR B2 at National Taiwan University. Fees are charged per semester and international students pay roughly double the local rate, from about NT$50,000 to NT$79,000 a semester at NTU.

What can be said from the universities' own fee rules is that holding a MOFA Taiwan Scholarship changes the fee category outright. At National Taiwan University, MOFA Taiwan Scholarship recipients are charged at the local student rate rather than the international rate, which for an undergraduate is the difference between about NT$25,230 to NT$39,560 a semester and about NT$50,460 to NT$79,120. The same local rate applies to international students with R.O.C. permanent residency and to those enrolled before or during the 2010/11 academic year.

So the scholarship question in Taiwan is not only about a stipend; it is about which column of the fee table an applicant sits in. That is worth establishing before applying, because the routes and quotas for scholarship applicants are separate from the ordinary international route.

An applicant who cannot get a government scholarship should check the university's own awards, which Taiwanese universities publish under their fees and scholarships pages, and should budget for the full international rate in the meantime.
