How to Apply to Universities in Taiwan (2027): Step by Step

Degree programmes at Taiwanese universities

1. Decide September or February entry first. Both exist, but February entry is often limited to graduate programmes, as it is at NTU.
2. Work backwards from the round, not the start date. For a September 2027 start, NTU's first round closes on 5 November 2026, nearly a year ahead.
3. Check whether your programme is taught in Mandarin or English, because that sets the certificate you need: Chinese at CEFR A2 (TOCFL Band A Level 2 or HSK 4) or English at CEFR B2 (TOEFL iBT 72, IELTS 5.5, TOEIC 785) at NTU.
4. Check the department as well as the university. NTU's minimums are university-wide floors; a department may require more and may reject or downgrade an offer on that basis.
5. If your language certificate is not ready, look at conditional admission before giving up the cycle. You get up to a year to produce it, and can spend that year in the university's own Chinese language division, but the offer dies if the year passes.
6. Apply to more than one department if it makes sense. Application fees are charged per department, and some universities reduce the fee from the third application onwards.
7. Budget per semester, not per year, and double the figure for a full year.

Which category you apply in

1. International student, overseas Chinese, Hong Kong and Macau, and mainland Chinese applicants apply through separate routes with separate deadlines and separate quotas.
2. The category also decides the fee: MOFA Taiwan Scholarship holders and applicants with R.O.C. permanent residency pay the local rate, not the international one.
3. Check this before choosing a route, because the routes are not interchangeable once an application is submitted.
