University of St. Gallen Admission Requirements 2027

The University of St. Gallen (HSG) is a specialised business, economics, law and international-affairs university with a legally limited number of places for foreign applicants. Every bachelor applicant with a foreign school certificate, regardless of nationality, must pass HSG's own two-stage selection procedure, and HSG charges international students substantially more per semester than domestic students.

Requirements

Bachelor

  • A recognised foreign upper-secondary school-leaving certificate; unless the applicant is a Swiss or Liechtenstein citizen or holds a Swiss settlement (C) permit, admission requires passing HSG's own selection procedure (online aptitude test, then video interview), since the number of places for foreign applicants is legally capped.
  • A qualifying SAT score, commonly cited around 1360 or higher, as an alternative direct pathway for some international applicants.
  • English or German proficiency depending on the Assessment Year track chosen; Law and Computer Science run only in German.
  • Application within the general period, 1 October to 30 April.

Master

  • A bachelor's degree, or equivalent diploma, of at least 180 ECTS credits from a recognised university.
  • English proficiency for English-taught courses; HSG's published example (PhD in Economics and Econometrics, used as the representative figure) sets C1: IELTS Academic 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 100.
  • Application within the specific programme's own round dates; several master's programmes, Strategy and International Management among them, run multiple sequential rounds through the admission year rather than one fixed deadline.

Documents

Secondary school certificate and transcripts, or bachelor's degree certificate and transcripts, with certified translations where required; SAT score report if using that pathway; results of HSG's own online aptitude test and video interview for bachelor applicants who are not exempt; a valid English or German language certificate matching the programme; passport or ID copy; and any further documents the specific master's programme requests. Applications are submitted through HSG's online application system.

How to apply

  1. Check whether you are exempt from HSG's selection procedure (Swiss/Liechtenstein citizens and Swiss settlement-permit holders with a recognised qualification); if not, register for the online aptitude test.
  2. Complete the aptitude test and, if you pass, the video interview, or submit a qualifying SAT score through the alternative pathway.
  3. Apply online within the general bachelor window, 1 October to 30 April, or your specific master's programme's own round dates.
  4. Pay the CHF 250 application fee.
  5. Wait for the admission decision; master's programmes running multiple rounds issue decisions on each round's own date.
  6. Once admitted, use the offer to apply for the Swiss national student visa if required, then complete enrolment and pay the CHF 3,129 semester tuition (non-Swiss rate).

English test waiver

The figures above are confirmed on HSG's PhD in Economics and Econometrics admission page (C1 level: IELTS Academic 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 100), used here as representative since HSG's general bachelor and master admission pages describe needing evidence of English proficiency without repeating a numeric score on every page. Check the specific programme page, since individual English-taught bachelor and master courses may set their own minimum.
