University of Rijeka Admission Requirements 2027

Requirements

Bachelor

This is an integrated undergraduate and graduate programme, so there is no separate bachelor's-only admission. Applicants are eligible if they have:

• completed at least four years of secondary school (or attained an equivalent qualification abroad)
• taken Biology, Chemistry and Physics, or related subjects, for at least two years during secondary school
• passed the final secondary-school graduation exam

Admission is decided by a written entrance exam in Biology, Chemistry and Physics (up to 120 points) plus secondary-school grades (up to 30 points), for a maximum of 150 points. Applicants who passed the MCAT (minimum 125 per section), hold a BA/BSc in natural sciences with strong Biology, Physics and Chemistry credits, or scored above 70 percent on MediTest-EU may be exempted from the entrance exam. Applicants who obtained their high school education abroad must have their diploma recognised in Croatia to be fully enrolled.

Master

There is no separate master's-level entry point into this programme; it is a single six-year integrated track from first year to the M.D. title. Applicants already enrolled at another EU higher-education institution may apply to transfer into the programme (not into the first or last year), submitting a Croatian-language B1 certificate for transfers into the 4th or 5th year, with applications for transfer accepted from 1 September to 15 September 2026 for the 2026/2027 academic year (Admission requirements page, medical-studies-in-english.com).

Documents

Applicants must submit, as notary-certified copies in PDF form via the Faculty's web application:

1. Completed international student application form
2. Certified copies of all secondary-school certificates (all years plus final certificate), with official transcript of records (applicants from Germany also submit 9th and 10th grade certificates and the ABITUR certificate)
3. Certificates of any higher-education courses or degrees already completed
4. Officially attested English translation of secondary-school or graduation certificates, if not originally in English or Croatian
5. Curriculum vitae in English (Europass format)
6. Four photographs, 4x6 cm, not older than six months
7. Proof of payment of the EUR 200 application fee
8. Original medical certificate of general health status, issued by an authorised family physician, in English or Croatian, not older than one month
9. Certified copy of the relevant passport pages or ID card
10. Original or certified copy of the birth certificate, not older than six months
11. Certified financial statement (bank statement or statement of financial credibility) showing the applicant or a sponsor can finance the study, certified by a public notary
12. English-language proficiency certificate (TOEFL, IELTS, or an accepted equivalent)

Applicants who obtained their high-school education abroad must also have their diploma recognised in Croatia, and those who completed secondary education outside the EU or without an IB degree must submit an online request for recognition of a foreign high-school qualification through the 'Postani student' portal (Application procedure and Admission requirements pages, medical-studies-in-english.com).

How to apply

1. Submit the application documents exclusively in PDF form through the Faculty's web application, by the deadline for the chosen exam term (spring, summer or autumn).
2. Once the documents are verified online, send the original documents by express post to: University of Rijeka, Faculty of Medicine, Medical Studies in English, Braće Branchetta 20, 51000 Rijeka, Croatia.
3. Register separately through the national Central Registration Office, 'Postani student' (www.postani-student.hr), and, once personal data is verified, select 'Medicine' at 'Medicinski fakultet u Rijeci' under 'Moj odabir' (My choice).
4. If educated outside the EU or without an IB degree, submit online the Request for recognition of a foreign high-school qualification through the same portal.
5. Sit the written entrance exam in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, held on-site in Rijeka and simultaneously abroad (spring: May 8, 2026; summer: July 3, 2026; autumn: September 4, 2026, held only if places remain).
6. Results are published on the Faculty's website (spring: May 11, 2026; summer: July 6, 2026; autumn: September 4, 2026); an appeal may be filed within 24 hours of results being announced.
7. Selected applicants receive an Offer of Place, then a Letter of Acceptance and a Student Contract.
8. To confirm a place after the spring exam, pay one third of the tuition fee by the end of May; a place can otherwise be reserved for the next academic year on the same terms if a seat is not available.
9. Enrol in person in Rijeka on the scheduled enrolment dates (2026/2027: spring/summer term July 16-17, 2026; autumn term September 17-18, 2026), paying the tuition fee in full at enrolment.
10. Make visa, accommodation and travel arrangements in advance; the academic year begins in October and admission is possible only into the winter semester (Application procedure and Call for applications pages, medical-studies-in-english.com).

English test waiver

Applicants who are native speakers of English, or who graduated from an English-speaking secondary school or college, are not required to submit an English-language test score. Cambridge and Oxford English exams and certificates, certificates from foreign language schools (B2 level), and certificates of English proficiency issued by the candidate's own secondary school are also accepted in place of TOEFL or IELTS (Admission requirements page, medical-studies-in-english.com).
