Admission at a glance

The University of Maryland, College Park, commonly called UMD, is the flagship public research university of the state of Maryland and sits just outside Washington, D.C. International applicants follow the same freshman process and calendar as domestic applicants, applying through the Common Application, with a non binding early action deadline of November 1 for priority consideration and a regular deadline of January 20.

UMD's own English Language Proficiency page sets a freshman minimum of TOEFL 95, IELTS 7 or Duolingo English Test 120, each less than two years old, though the requirement can be waived at the discretion of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for applicants who completed four years of US high school without ESL coursework or who already hold a degree from a regionally accredited American institution.

Nonresident tuition and mandatory fees, the rate international undergraduates pay, total 22,043 dollars a semester for 2026 to 2027, 44,086 dollars for the year, according to UMD's own student billing office; students in their junior or senior year in Business, Engineering or Computer Science pay a higher differential rate of about 47,461 dollars for the year. These figures do not include the mandatory student health insurance plan, billed separately at just under 3,000 dollars a year, or room, board and other living costs.
