Requirements

Bachelor

Applicants choose between the route for holders of an Austrian school leaving certificate or general higher education entrance qualification from Germany, and a separate route for other qualifications, which carries its own legalisation and translation requirements. Some English-taught bachelor's programmes, including International Business and Economics, run a special admission procedure with an entrance exam; others, including Worlds of English, do not. English test minimum not confirmed on the pages reached in this pass.

Master

A completed bachelor's degree recognised as giving entry to the field. Klagenfurt offers a long list of English-taught master's programmes. English test minimum not confirmed on the pages reached in this pass.

PhD

A completed master's degree or equivalent and admission to one of four thematic doctoral programmes, with English supervision available.

Documents

School leaving certificate or prior degree certificate, following either the Austrian/German route or the separate international route with its own legalisation and translation rules. Passport copy. Language certificate where the programme requires one (specific minimum not confirmed in this pass).

How to apply

  1. Check whether your target programme runs a special admission procedure with an entrance exam.
  2. Confirm which admission route applies to your qualification (Austrian/German school leaving certificate, or the separate international route) and prepare legalisation and translation of your documents if the international route applies to you.
  3. Apply online within the published general admission period for your level, or the entrance-exam programme's own period if different.
  4. Sit any required entrance exam.
  5. On admission, enrol and pay the tuition fee where it applies and the ÖH union fee each semester, by 31 October (winter) or 31 March (summer).

English test waiver

The general requirement is CEFR B2, evidenced by TOEFL iBT 87, IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each of the four parts, or Cambridge B2 First. Four master's programmes require C1 instead: Worlds of English, Game Studies and Engineering, International Management, and Media and Convergence Management. C1 is evidenced by TOEFL iBT 110, IELTS 8.0 overall, or Cambridge C1 Advanced at grade A. A certificate must not be older than two years at the time of application. No certificate is needed from an applicant who has completed a programme of at least two years taught in English at a recognised post-secondary institution in an EU or EEA state, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand or Canada, or who passed English at B2 in a school leaving examination in one of those countries. Doctoral admission may be exempted where the thesis can be written, supervised and examined in another language.
