Requirements

Bachelor

• A foreign upper secondary education based on formal general education, substantially equivalent to the Swiss Matura: 12 years of schooling, required subjects studied across the final three years, checked against Fribourg's own country-specific list.
• CEFR B2 in French or German, the university's two teaching languages.
• Application within the fixed calendar: 1 February to 30 April (autumn semester, general), 28 February (autumn semester, visa candidates), 1 September to 30 November (spring semester, general), 30 September (spring semester, visa candidates).

Master

• A bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS credits and three years of study from a university Fribourg recognises; faculties may set further prerequisite coursework.
• CEFR B2 in French or German for most programmes; a few master's programmes are taught in English instead, without a published numeric test score.
• Application within the same fixed calendar as bachelor's admission.

Documents

Secondary school certificate or bachelor's degree certificate and transcripts, checked against Fribourg's country-specific admission database; proof of B2 French or German (or, for an English-taught master's, evidence of English proficiency such as TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge, without one published numeric minimum); passport or ID copy; and the CHF 100 application fee payment (CHF 100 plus CHF 50 for a late application).

How to apply

1. Check your country's specific admission conditions on Fribourg's admissions database (cageo list).
2. Confirm the teaching language of your programme and prepare a B2 French or German certificate (or English proof for an English-taught master's).
3. Apply within the fixed window: 1 February to 30 April for the autumn semester (28 February if you need a Swiss entry visa), or 1 September to 30 November for the spring semester (30 September if you need a visa).
4. Pay the CHF 100 application fee (plus CHF 50 if applying late, within the separate late window).
5. Wait for the admission decision, then use it to apply for the Swiss national student visa if required.
6. Complete enrolment and pay the semester fee once admitted.

English test waiver

The University of Fribourg's own pages state a recommended CEFR level, not a fixed test score: B1 for European students and B2 for non-European students in the language of instruction. Non-European students applying for a Swiss visa must submit an official language certificate (TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge accepted) showing B2, without the university publishing a numeric IELTS or TOEFL cutoff for that B2 level. Bachelor's teaching is in French or German (B2 required); a few master's programmes are taught in English, and no official page found this session gave a specific numeric English score requirement for them.
