University of Bern Tuition Fees 2027 for International Students

The University of Bern teaches bachelor's degrees mainly in German, with many master's programmes offered fully in English. Since autumn 2026, non-Swiss students who did not live in Switzerland or Liechtenstein when they gained their entry qualification pay a much higher tuition surcharge than before, taking their total to roughly three times the domestic rate.

The University of Bern charges CHF 850 a semester in base tuition, the same for every student. On top of this, a non-Swiss student who did not have their civil-law residence in Switzerland or Liechtenstein when they obtained their university entrance qualification pays an additional fee that, since the autumn semester of 2026, is CHF 1,700 a semester, up from CHF 200 previously, taking the total to CHF 2,550 a semester. A transitional arrangement keeps the previous CHF 200 additional fee for non-Swiss students who were already enrolled before autumn 2026, until they complete that degree level. All students also pay a CHF 34 semester fee (occupational accident insurance, university sport, social and cultural institutions), rising by CHF 25 for members of the Student Union. The application and registration fee is CHF 100, non-refundable and non-transferable to another semester.
