TU Wien Admission Requirements 2027 for International Students

Requirements

Bachelor

A school leaving certificate that gives access to all sectors of higher education in the country where it was issued; a certificate that only grants access to part of the system, such as a Fachhochschulreife, is not accepted. TU Wien checks schooling length (minimum 12 years) and subject coverage, and may require supplementary exams in mathematics, chemistry, physics or German. Programmes taught in English need English at B2 level.

Master

A completed bachelor's degree recognised as giving access to a master's programme in the field; a nostrification or appraisal step applies where the prior degree needs formal equivalence checking. English-taught programmes need English at B2 (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 87).

PhD

A completed master's degree or equivalent and admission to a doctoral programme; a supervisor agreement is normally needed before applying.

Documents

School leaving certificate or prior degree certificate, legalised for the issuing country. Official translation into German or English for any document, and any certification stamp, not already in one of those languages, kept attached to the original. Passport copy. English or German language certificate where the programme requires one. Nostrification or appraisal documentation where a prior qualification needs formal equivalence assessment.

How to apply

1. Check whether your school leaving certificate or degree gives access to all sectors of higher education in your home country, and whether nostrification or appraisal applies to it.
2. Apply online within the published non-EU/EEA application window for the semester you want to start.
3. Submit legalised documents with certified translations where needed, plus your language certificate.
4. Sit any supplementary exam TU Wien requires where your schooling differs from the Austrian pattern.
5. Receive your admission letter and complete in-person enrolment at the Admissions Office by the enrolment deadline.
6. Pay the tuition fee, where it applies, and the ÖH union fee each semester.

English test waiver

A high school leaving certificate or a completed degree programme taught in English is accepted without a test, with no time limit. TOEFL/IELTS/Cambridge certificates are valid for two years from issue. TOEFL introduced a new scoring scale from 21 January 2026; TU Wien lists the equivalent minimum as 4.5 on that new scale alongside the legacy 87 iBT score.
