Requirements
Bachelor
Bachelor's applications follow the Tanzania Commission for Universities window, which normally begins from early July to late October of each year. Applications are made through the same online portal, and no application is considered after the stated deadline.
Master
- A relevant bachelor's degree (UQF level 8) or equivalent with a GPA of 2.7 or a B grade from a recognised institution of higher learning.
- A foreign degree needs an average of B or above on the Mzumbe scale, and the qualification must be validated by the Tanzania Commission for Universities.
- Some programmes have extra conditions. For example, the MSc in Accounting and Finance needs a solid accounting background, and the MSc in Health Monitoring and Evaluation needs two years of working experience in health projects and an interview at the Main Campus.
- Applicants whose first language is not English, or who did not go through an education system with English as the medium of instruction, must prove sufficient command of English for postgraduate study.
PhD
- A master's degree (UQF level 9) in the relevant field with a GPA of at least 3.0 or a B grade. A foreign master's degree needs an average of at least B and validation by the Tanzania Commission for Universities.
- A one page motivation statement and a concept note of two to three A4 pages with the application.
- Applications for PhD study are received at any time of the year.
Documents
- The completed online application form, including the email addresses of two referees. Referees must be academically familiar with the applicant, such as a tutor, lecturer or research supervisor. For master's applicants one referee may be a professional associate such as an immediate manager or employer. Relatives, friends and primary or secondary school teachers are not accepted.
- Certified copies of degree certificates, transcripts and other certificates, recently certified.
- Validation of a foreign degree by the Tanzania Commission for Universities.
- Proof of English command for applicants whose first language is not English or who did not study in English.
- Proof of payment of the application fee, made with the control number that the portal generates.
- PhD applicants: a one page motivation statement and a concept note of two to three A4 pages.
How to apply
- Register on the Online Application and Admission Portal at admission.mzumbe.ac.tz with a valid email address and phone number, then activate the account from the email you receive.
- Accept the terms and conditions, fill in personal details and choose your preferred campus (Main Campus, Dar es Salaam Campus or Mbeya Campus).
- Request the payment control number from the portal and pay the application fee of USD 30. If mobile operators and banks in Tanzania are not available to you, write to the Finance office at df@mu.ac.tz for alternative payment instructions.
- Upload your documents, including two referee emails, and submit the application before 31 October 2026 for the November 2026 intake.
- Wait for the selection result, which is sent to the email address and phone number you gave.
English test waiver
Mzumbe University does not publish a minimum IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo score. Its postgraduate regulations set an English rule for international applicants only: applicants whose first language is not English, or who did not go through an education system with English as the medium of instruction, are required to prove that they have sufficient command of English to cope with postgraduate studies. The university does not name the test or the evidence it accepts, so applicants in that group should ask the Directorate of Research, Publications and Postgraduate Studies (drps@mzumbe.ac.tz) which proof it will take before they apply.
