Oman's national university, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in Muscat, was established in 1986 and had 19,284 students in 2025/2026. It admits international students mainly at postgraduate level. In the second cycle of 2026/2027 it offered 43 postgraduate programmes to Omani and international applicants, with applications from 15 July to 15 August 2026 and study starting in January 2027; international students not living in Oman must study full time. Postgraduate fees for students starting in 2026 or later are paid each semester: international students pay OMR 168 per credit hour in science colleges and OMR 147 in humanities colleges, plus a thesis fee, and a thesis-only PhD costs OMR 9,800 in the sciences. Applicants pay OMR 10 per programme and need the English score set by their programme, for example IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 79 for the MSc in Mechanical Engineering. SQU reserves two full master's scholarships for international students from outside Oman, covering tuition with a monthly allowance of OMR 250.
The Royal Oman Police issues the student visa. According to its visa page, the visa must be used within six months of issue, allows a stay of one to two years from the date of entry, permits multiple entries, and can be renewed if the holder continues studying. Applicants provide two 6x4 cm photographs and a copy of a passport valid for at least six months. The sponsoring institution provides a copy of the competent authority's approval for it to host students from abroad, together with its commercial registration and signature sheet. Nationals of listed countries, including Bangladesh, must also provide a medical certificate. The visa page lists the fee as thirty (30) without naming the currency, and renewal must be supported by a letter from the educational institution.
Foreign residents must obtain a resident card within 30 days of entering Oman; the Royal Oman Police lists the card fee as 6 for one year and 11 for two years, again without a currency.
