Hong Kong Student Visa (2027): Requirements, Proof of Funds, Fee, Processing Time

Hong Kong runs eight government-funded universities alongside a wider network of degree-awarding institutions, teaching mostly in English and admitting non-local students through each university's own International Qualifications pathway. A student visa is applied for through the Immigration Department, and graduates of a locally accredited degree can stay for up to 24 months after finishing to look for work under the IANG scheme, without needing a job offer in hand.

What you need

A letter of acceptance from an approved Hong Kong educational institution, a valid travel document, a local sponsor (the institution itself, or an individual Hong Kong resident), proof of financial support such as bank statements, savings passbooks, tax receipts or salary slips (in English or Chinese, with certified translation otherwise), and, for applicants under 18, parental consent and guardian arrangements.

How to apply

  1. Receive a letter of acceptance from an approved Hong Kong institution.
  2. Complete Form ID 995A (applicant) and, if applicable, Form ID 995B (sponsor).
  3. Submit the application online through the gov.hk portal, or by mail to the Immigration Department's Receipt and Despatch Sub-Unit; you do not need to be in Hong Kong to apply.
  4. Provide financial proof and all other required documents; the Immigration Department reviews each application on its individual merits.
  5. Wait for processing, which normally takes about six weeks from receipt of all required documents, longer during the June to August summer rush.
  6. Receive the visa/entry permit and travel to Hong Kong to register with the institution.

Why applications are refused

The Immigration Department does not publish a list of specific refusal reasons and states it retains absolute discretion to refuse an application even where the applicant appears to meet all eligibility criteria.
