How to Apply to Universities in Hong Kong (2027): Step by Step

Hong Kong runs eight government-funded universities alongside a wider network of degree-awarding institutions, teaching mostly in English and admitting non-local students through each university's own International Qualifications pathway. A student visa is applied for through the Immigration Department, and graduates of a locally accredited degree can stay for up to 24 months after finishing to look for work under the IANG scheme, without needing a job offer in hand.

Bachelor

  1. Identify which of Hong Kong's UGC-funded universities offer your intended programme and check each one's International Qualifications (or equivalently named) admission pathway.
  2. Note each university's own deadline structure: some hold a single early-bird date, some run a priority round followed by rolling admission, and some (EdUHK) run rolling admission throughout with no fixed date.
  3. Submit the online application directly to each university and pay its application fee (commonly HK$300 to HK$600).
  4. Submit predicted or actual results, an English test score (IELTS or TOEFL) unless exempted, and any other supporting documents the programme asks for.
  5. Receive the admission decision; accept the offer and pay any place-securing fee required on acceptance.
  6. Apply for a Hong Kong student visa/entry permit through the Immigration Department once the offer is accepted; you do not need to be in Hong Kong to apply.

Master

  1. Identify the specific graduate programme; each faculty or graduate school sets and publishes its own deadlines and requirements separately from the undergraduate cycle.
  2. Submit transcripts, a relevant bachelor's degree, and any required test scores.
  3. Pay the application fee and submit by the programme's own closing date.
  4. Receive the outcome and accept the offer.
  5. Apply for a Hong Kong student visa/entry permit through the Immigration Department once accepted.
