English-taught degrees
- Find the faculty, not just the university. In Czechia the faculty sets the fee, the deadline and the entrance examination, and two faculties of the same university routinely differ on all three.
- Check whether a separate deadline applies to non-EU applicants. Masaryk's Faculty of Pharmacy closes on 31 May for applicants from outside the EU against 31 July for EU residents.
- Apply online through the university's own system. Charles uses the SIS; Masaryk uses its own e-application. Each faculty application is submitted separately, so applying to two Charles faculties means two applications and two fees.
- Pay the application fee before the deadline. Charles's First Faculty of Medicine charges EUR 285 and will not let an applicant sit the entrance examination until it is paid.
- Prepare for the entrance examination, because it is the gate. Charles's First Faculty of Medicine admitted 102 of 785 General Medicine applicants in the year before its 2026/27 cycle. Both Charles and Masaryk publish sample tests and sell preparatory courses.
- Apply for bonus points or a waiver if you qualify, and do it early. Charles awards bonus points worth 10 per cent of the round one result for A grades in Biology, Chemistry and a third science at A Level, or a strong Abitur, and the application for them closes 14 days before round one. A waiver of round one is possible for applicants with relevant university study, but round two is compulsory for everyone.
- Have the English evidence your faculty asks for. Charles's First Faculty of Medicine asks for none, because the whole examination is in English. Masaryk asks for an official certificate at CEFR B2 or better.
- Get foreign secondary education recognised. Both universities require proof that a school-leaving qualification obtained abroad meets Czech requirements, and this is a separate process from admission.
Czech-taught degrees
- Understand what you are being offered: studying in Czech at a public university is free, with no tuition for the standard length of the degree plus one year.
- Budget for the language first. A year at a university preparatory language institute, such as Charles University's Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies, is the normal route, and it is charged.
- Expect the same entrance examination, in Czech. The free track is not an easier one.
- Check the overrun rule before committing. Exceed the standard length by more than one year and a fee begins: six years is standard for General Medicine, seven are free, and a charge starts in the eighth.
