The University of Barisal, commonly known as Barishal University, briefly BU, is one of the newly established public universities in Bangladesh established on 22nd February 2011. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had first declared to establish the university in 1973.
Presently, BU is one of the well-known universities in Bangladesh. The university is the 34th general category of University in the country. Now the university provides Graduate and Undergraduate degrees.

The University of Barisal has been gradually improving by developing its infrastructure and quality education. The motto of the university is “Knowledge is Power” (জ্ঞানই শক্তি).
Though the university has not passed so much time but developed a lot, and nearly 8 thousand students are now taking higher education from here. BU has gained a lot of reputation in the country and abroad in a short period of time.

Establishment Background
The first demand was for establishing a university in Barisal in 1960. After the country’s independence in 1973, then Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman announced the establishment of a university at a public meeting in Barisal. After that, the activities of the university did not go ahead.
Then on 23 November 1987, President Ziaur Rahman announced the establishment of a full-fledged university in Barisal at a meeting at Barisal Circuit House. But more than three decades later, that declaration has not been implemented. As the demands of the people of Barisal intensified, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina finally laid the foundation stone of the university on 22 January 2011.
The Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid inaugurated the first-class activities by hoisting the national flag at 11:15 am. In the first academic session (2011-2012), four hundred students, twenty-five teachers, fifteen officers, and thirty-five staff will be there.

Barisal University is located at Kornokathi,(Dhaka-Patuakhali Hwy), Barisal, 8200, Bangladesh (
22.6599°N 90.3620°E) on the eastern bank of the Kirtonkhola river. The university is about 2 kilometers away from the center of Barishal City. The university is on 50 acres of area with all the academic buildings.

In the first academic session 2011-2012, there were four hundred students, twenty-five teachers, fifteen officers, and thirty-five staff. University of Barisal Admission
BU is a general category of the university as well as it is a newly established university, so its needs enough students. BU arranged annual admission for the students and choose them based on their merit lists. At present, the university is operating undergraduate and graduate programs, so they take admission on the two degrees.
University of Barisal Campus
Barisal University is spread over 50 acres of land, with its huge campus covering a pictorial green environment. As the whole campus is 2 km far from the main city, the entire campus is quite calm and environment-friendly. The campus contains academic buildings, administration buildings, auditorium, library, computer center, workshop, research laboratories, residence halls, teachers’ quarter, mosque, etc.
Transportation & Medical Center
Transportation & medical Center are available at Barishal University. There are buses, cars for the students to drop them at their residence. The cars are mainly for the teachers and other academic staff.
There is also a facility for the students Medical Center where the students get primary treatment. If there were any serious injuries, they were referred to the Sher -E -Bangla Medical College Hospital, about 4 kilometers away from the BU.
Sports and Entertainment
Sports and entertainments are the parts of Barishal University. The university arranges various types of sports and entertainment as educational accessories to refresh the mind and keep the student’s fitness fit. The university provides facilities for football, cricket, volleyball, table tennis, etc. as well as the students participate in debates on different topics, cultural shows, etc.
Library
The LIbrary is a storehouse of books on various topics, journals, and another prospectus where the learners gain knowledge on different topics. So the library is an integral part of a university. With this in mind, BU has set up a central library with all other facilities for the students and other staff. The library supports the students with various books, journals, research, and intelligence sports.
The library is right thousands of books, journals, and online books. Anyone from the university will be a member of the library.
Accommodation/Residential Halls
Accommodation is one of the main demands for a university. Many students come to the university from around the country, and if they have no accommodation system, they will face many problems on the way of study. That’s why BU has managed four residential halls.

Research Project
Barishal University has already researched many topics, and right now, there is some ongoing research. “BECK- Integrating Education with Consumer Behaviour Relevant to Energy Efficiency and Climate Change at the Universities of Russia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh” is one of the ongoing researches.
