Madison reviews secondary school transcripts for grades and course rigor as the main academic factor. Standardized test policy and any curriculum specific document requirements for international applicants are described on Madison's international applicant pages. Applicants whose native language is not English, or who did not complete all four years of secondary school in English medium instruction, must submit a TOEFL, IELTS or Duoligo English Test score sent electronically from the testing service.
Documents
The Common Application or the Universities of Wisconsin application, official secondary school transcripts and any required supporting documents for a student's national curriculum, an English proficiency score where required, and, after admission, financial documentation for International Student Services to issue the Form I-20.
How to apply
- Apply through the Common Application or the Universities of Wisconsin application by the early action or regular deadline.
- Submit official secondary school transcripts.
- Send an English proficiency score electronically from the testing service if required, allowing several weeks for delivery.
- Pay the 80 dollar application fee or request a fee waiver.
- After admission, submit financial documentation to International Student Services so Madison can issue the I-20.
English test waiver
Applicants are exempt if English was the primary language of instruction in all four years of secondary school. Standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT or AP English cannot substitute for an English proficiency score. From January 21, 2026, TOEFL iBT also reports a 4.5 minimum on its redesigned scale alongside the older 80 on the 0 to 120 scale.
