Universiti Putra Malaysia Admission Requirements 2027

Universiti Putra Malaysia is a public research university in Serdang, Selangor, known for agriculture, veterinary medicine, forestry and engineering. International undergraduates apply through UPM's own e-SMP portal with a general IELTS 5.5 floor, and tuition runs from about RM 10,000 a year for most science and arts programmes up to RM 40,000 a year for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree

A recognised Senior High School or Secondary School certificate covering 11 to 12 years of study (results valid for 5 years), or an equivalent qualification the UPM Senate recognises. Programmes in agriculture, veterinary medicine, food science, biotechnology, engineering and science expect science subjects in the prior qualification. Applicants from some countries must also submit results from a national entrance exam where UPM requires one.

English language

One of: IELTS Academic 5.5, TOEFL 500 (PBT) / 60 (iBT) / 176 (CBT), Malaysian University English Test (MUET) Band 3, or Certificate in English Proficiency (CIEP/ELS UPM) Level 109. Some programmes, including several in the School of Business and Economics, set a higher band. IELTS Indicator, Aptis, Duolingo and TOEFL ITP scores are not accepted, and test results expire after five years.

Postgraduate (master's and PhD)

A relevant bachelor's degree (for master's) or master's degree (for PhD) recognised by the UPM Senate, applied for through the School of Graduate Studies rather than the undergraduate e-SMP system. Specific CGPA and programme requirements are set by the receiving faculty or institute.

  • Supporting documents combined into a single PDF and emailed to the relevant admissions address where the programme requires it

How to apply

  1. Check the academic and English requirements for the intended programme on UPM's international admission pages (akademik.upm.edu.my).
  2. Register and complete the application through the e-SMP online system, selecting the intended intake (the main international bachelor's intake begins in October).
  3. Upload certified transcripts, passport copy, photo and any available English test result, and pay the USD 100 application fee.
  4. Wait for the relevant faculty to assess the application.
  5. Accept the Letter of Offer once issued.
  6. UPM's Putra International Centre (i-PUTRA) applies to Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) for the student's Visa Approval Letter; EMGS's own guidance is to allow about two months for this before travelling, and the online EMGS form must be completed in a single session since progress cannot be saved partway through.
  7. Travel to Malaysia only after the Visa Approval Letter is issued, then complete arrival formalities and Student Pass endorsement through UPM and the Immigration Department.

English test waiver

Malaysian University English Test (MUET) Band 3 is accepted in place of IELTS or TOEFL for most programmes, and UPM also accepts a Certificate in English Proficiency (CIEP/ELS) Level 109. IELTS Indicator, Aptis, Duolingo and TOEFL ITP are not accepted. Test scores must be no more than five years old. Applicants who meet the academic requirement but not the English requirement can usually get provisional admission and clear the English condition later, except for programmes such as Bachelor of Arts in English Language, English Literature and Teaching of English as a Second Language, which require the test score at the time of application.
