University of Bremen Admission Requirements 2027 for International Students

The University of Bremen is a public research university in the city state of Bremen known for its marine and space sciences and engineering. It charges no tuition fee to international students and processes bachelor's applications free of charge.

Requirements

Bachelor's

Applicants need a higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the German Abitur, reviewed through uni-assist for most non-EU applicants. Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German; many international bachelor's applicants do not yet have the required German level at the time of application and take preparatory language study first.

Master's

Applicants need a relevant bachelor's degree and apply directly to the university rather than through uni-assist. English-taught master's programmes commonly ask for a certificate at CEFR C1, equivalent to IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 95, though some programmes accept B2.

Documents

Certified copies of school and university certificates and transcripts; a preliminary review through uni-assist for most non-EU bachelor's applicants; a certified translation if the originals are not in German or English; proof of German or English language proficiency depending on the programme; and confirmation of health insurance before enrolment.

How to apply

Choose a bachelor's or master's programme; bachelor's applicants from outside the EU normally apply through uni-assist, while master's applicants apply directly to the university.
Obtain a preliminary review of your qualification through uni-assist first if you are a non-EU bachelor's applicant.
Submit your application inside the stated window; for bachelor's and state examination programmes the closing date is 15 July for the winter semester and 15 January for the summer semester.
Upload certified copies of your certificates, transcripts and language certificate.
If admitted, pay the semester contribution, arrange health insurance, and apply for a student visa if coming from outside the EU or EEA.
Enrol and register your address in Bremen.

English test waiver

Bremen commonly asks for a certificate at CEFR C1 for English-taught master's programmes, which it treats as equivalent to IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 95. Some programmes, including Applied Geosciences and Industrial Mathematics, accept the lower B2 level instead. Applicants whose prior degree or school education was in English are generally exempt from a separate certificate.
