Requirements

Bachelor

• A secondary school leaving certificate, or equivalent higher-education entry qualification, that the University of Basel recognises; where it grants only partial access in its home system, proof of admission to an equivalent degree programme at a state-recognised university there instead.
• German language proficiency sufficient for study, since bachelor's teaching is predominantly in German.
• Application within the fixed calendar: around 15 December to 15 February for the autumn semester, or 15 October to 30 November for the spring semester.

Master

• A bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS credits from a university the University of Basel recognises.
• For English-taught programmes, proof of English proficiency; the Faculty of Business and Economics' own table sets TOEFL iBT 90 (paper-based 575) or IELTS 6.5, waived for a prior degree taught entirely in English. Other faculties publish their own figure.
• Application within the same fixed calendar as bachelor's admission.

Documents

Secondary school certificate or bachelor's degree certificate and transcripts, with certified translations where not in German, English, French or Italian; proof of German or English proficiency as the programme requires; passport or ID copy; and any programme-specific documents the faculty asks for. Applications are submitted through the University of Basel's online application system.

How to apply

1. Confirm your access route: whether your certificate is directly recognised or you need proof of admission to an equivalent programme at home.
2. Confirm the language requirement for your programme and prepare the certificate.
3. Apply online within the fixed window: around 15 December to 15 February for the autumn semester, or 15 October to 30 November for the spring semester.
4. Pay the CHF 100 application and administration fee (a further CHF 150 applies if a late application is exceptionally accepted).
5. Wait for the admission decision, then use it to apply for the Swiss national student visa if required.
6. Complete enrolment and pay the CHF 850 semester fee once admitted.

English test waiver

The figures above are confirmed on the Faculty of Business and Economics' own published table (TOEFL iBT 90 or paper-based 575, IELTS 6.5) for its Master in Finance programme, used here as representative since the University of Basel's own general 'Language Skills' admission page could not be rendered as text this session (its content appears to load by script). A prior degree taught entirely in English is commonly accepted as an alternative to a test score; applicants should confirm the exact minimum for their own faculty before applying.
