Requirements

Bachelor's degree

Applicants must hold a foreign passport, be a secondary school graduate or final year student, and meet the academic standard for their chosen division. The Academy of Arts and Design additionally requires a portfolio or studio based assessment. Applicants who clear document review sit an integrative test; Tsinghua does not publish one fixed academic score cutoff, since the decision is a holistic review of transcripts, test result and supporting materials.

Master's and PhD

Each graduate school sets its own academic requirement, typically a relevant bachelor's degree, or a master's degree for doctoral applicants, and for research programmes, contact with a prospective supervisor before applying. Language requirements are set by the school hosting the programme rather than by the university as a whole.

Documents

Secondary school transcripts and graduation certificate, or a letter confirming expected graduation, a passport copy, an English or Chinese language test result where the programme asks for one, a personal statement, recommendation letters, and any portfolio or supplementary material the chosen division requires. Graduate applicants additionally submit a research plan or statement of purpose, degree certificates and transcripts authenticated through a designated agency, and two recommendation letters from associate professors or above.

How to apply

1. Choose a division for undergraduate study, or a specific school and programme for graduate study, since the two follow different systems and calendars.
2. Register in the Online Application System for undergraduate study, or the relevant graduate school's own system, and complete the form within the published window.
3. Upload all required documents and pay the non-refundable application fee, 800 CNY for undergraduate applicants.
4. Undergraduate applicants who pass document review sit the integrative test, held after the application window closes; Academy of Arts and Design applicants also submit a portfolio.
5. Wait for the admission decision, based on a holistic review of academic record, language ability, test result and supporting materials.
6. If accepted, apply for the JW201 or JW202 form and an X1 student visa before travelling to China.

English test waiver

Tsinghua does not publish one university wide IELTS or TOEFL minimum for undergraduate applicants; the application pages ask for an English test result but set no floor. Individual graduate schools set their own figure instead: the Shenzhen International Graduate School asks for IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 80, used here as the representative figure, while the Department of Computer Science's Advanced Computing programme asks for IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 85. Programmes taught in Chinese ask for an HSK certificate instead, at a level set by the school.
