Tohoku University is a national research university in Sendai and one of Japan's oldest imperial universities. From 2027 it launches Gateway College, a new interdisciplinary undergraduate programme taught primarily in English with separate April and October admission cycles, replacing its earlier Future Global Leadership Program.

Gateway College's October 2027 (Fall) intake: entirely in English, screened online. First-stage screening result by 5 February 2027, second-stage screening 21-22 February 2027, results announced 24 March 2027. The same programme's April 2027 intake instead applies 13-16 October 2026 with mostly in-person, Japanese-language screening, which suits a Japan-based applicant better than one applying from abroad.
