Requirements
Bachelor
A general university entrance qualification giving access to higher education in the country where it was issued. Language proficiency at a general minimum of B2 CEFR; German-taught programmes need German, English-taught programmes and joint programmes need English (IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 80, PTE 59, or Duolingo 110), with joint programmes potentially setting stricter requirements.
Master
A completed bachelor's degree recognised as giving entry to the field. English-taught master's programmes need English at the same B2 general minimum (IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 80, PTE 59, Duolingo 110). Applications after 30 September (winter) or 28 February (summer) risk missing a timely start.
PhD
A completed master's degree or equivalent and admission to a doctoral programme; doctoral applications are accepted throughout the year.
Documents
School leaving certificate or prior degree certificate. English or German language certificate matching the programme, at a general minimum of B2. Passport copy.
How to apply
- Check your programme's language of instruction and whether it is a joint programme with stricter language requirements.
- Apply online within the third-country application window if you are a non-EU/EEA/Swiss applicant, or the later EU/EEA/Swiss window if you qualify for it.
- Submit your qualification documents and language certificate.
- For master's programmes, apply before 30 September (winter) or 28 February (summer) to keep a timely start realistic.
- On admission, enrol and pay the tuition fee where it applies and the ÖH union fee each semester.
English test waiver
Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) at Grade C or higher (at least 160 points), or Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) at a minimum score of 160, are also accepted, all at a general minimum of B2 CEFR for degree programme admission. TOEFL scores of 80 (internet-based) or 550 (paper-based) apply to tests taken until 20 January 2026; from 21 January 2026, TOEFL moved to a new scale and the university lists the equivalent minimum as 4. Joint study programmes with partner universities may set stricter requirements than these general minimums.
