Requirements
Bachelor's (G30 International Programs)
Applicants need to have completed, or be on track to complete, 12 years of school education recognised as equivalent to Japanese upper secondary school, meeting each programme's own subject prerequisites (for example mathematics and physics for the Automotive Engineering programme). No Japanese ability is required at entry.
Master's and PhD
Each graduate school sets its own requirements; several also run English-taught G30 graduate programmes with their own published admission requirements, generally expecting a relevant Bachelor's degree (or Master's degree for doctoral study) recognised as equivalent to a Japanese degree.
Documents
For G30 undergraduate programmes: an online application, secondary school transcripts and certificates, an IELTS or TOEFL score report (or Duolingo English Test, accepted by some programmes), and any programme-specific documents such as a statement of purpose, recommendation letters or a portfolio, set out in that programme's own admission requirements document published each year. For graduate applications: degree certificates and transcripts, a research plan, and a language test result, with exact requirements set by the individual graduate school or G30 graduate programme.
How to apply
- Choose one of the ten G30 undergraduate degree programmes and download that year's own admission requirements document, since English test thresholds and documents can vary by programme.
- Prepare your transcripts, IELTS or TOEFL score, and any required essays or portfolio.
- Submit your online application within the published round: for October 2027 entry, the first round ran 2 to 19 November 2026, with a second round in January 2027 for programmes still accepting applications.
- Wait for the admission decision, which may include a document-based screening only or an interview depending on the programme.
- If accepted, Nagoya University's admissions office helps arrange your Certificate of Eligibility; use it to apply for a student visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate before travelling.
- Enrol in Nagoya, arrange health insurance and register your address.
English test waiver
G30 undergraduate programmes ask for IELTS Academic 6.0 overall (one skill retake is accepted) or TOEFL iBT 80 (60 for the paper-delivered test); TOEFL iBT Home Edition and MyBest scores are accepted, but TOEIC and TOEFL ITP are not. Programme-specific exceptions may apply, so applicants should confirm the exact figure in that year's own admission requirements document for their chosen G30 programme.
