Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies Admission Requirements 2027

Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU, formerly LLU) is a Latvian state university founded in 1939 and based in Jelgava. It teaches bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes in life sciences, engineering and social sciences, with three bachelor's and six master's programmes plus an integrated Veterinary Medicine programme delivered in English for international students.

Requirements

Bachelor

  • Completed secondary education that qualifies the applicant for higher education in their home country.
  • Biosystems Machinery and Technologies (Bachelor Degree of Mechanical Engineering, 180 ECTS, 3 years): at least a "satisfactory" grade in Mathematics, plus an online entrance test in Mathematics.
  • Information Technologies for Sustainable Development (Professional Bachelor Degree in Information Technologies, 240 ECTS, 4 years): at least a "satisfactory" grade in Mathematics, plus an online entrance test in computer sciences.
  • Sociology of Organizations and Public Administration (Bachelor Degree, 180 ECTS, 3 years): an online aptitude test in social sciences.
  • English proficiency for all three bachelor's programmes: CEFR level B2, IELTS 6.0, TOEFL PBT 547, or TOEFL iBT 80 (stated identically on each programme page).

Master

  • A relevant bachelor's degree (professional or academic, depending on the programme) or equivalent higher education.
  • No entrance exam, but a recorded online motivation interview is required.
  • English proficiency for all six English-taught master's programmes (Information Technologies; Food Science; Business Management; Sociology of Organizations and Public Administration; Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing; Human Resource Management and Career Counselling): CEFR level B2, IELTS 6.0, TOEFL PBT 547, or TOEFL iBT 80.
  • The integrated Veterinary Medicine programme (Qualification: Veterinarian, 360 ECTS, 6 years, admits directly from secondary education) requires at least a "satisfactory" grade in Biology or Chemistry, the same English minimums as above, and an online entrance test in biology and chemistry.

Documents

  • A copy of the applicant's passport.
  • Copies of documents proving previous education (diploma, transcript of records) in their original language; if the document is not in English or Latvian, a notarized English translation must be provided.
  • Proof of English-language proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, etc.), unless exempted under the waiver rule above.
  • A receipt confirming payment of the non-refundable application fee.
  • For doctoral applicants only: a CV, a recommendation letter, and an overview of funding sources for tuition, living costs and research, sent to postgraduate@lbtu.lv.

How to apply

  1. Choose a study programme; the entry requirements differ by programme and level.
  2. Prepare the required documents and submit the online application together with proof of English proficiency and the application fee receipt by the relevant deadline.
  3. LBTU forwards the education documents to Latvia's Academic Information Centre (AIC) for recognition, which normally takes 3 to 4 weeks.
  4. Bachelor's applicants sit a mandatory online subject entrance test; master's applicants are exempt from this step.
  5. All applicants complete a recorded online motivation interview as part of the evaluation.
  6. Once the requirements are met, LBTU issues an Acceptance Letter and a tuition fee invoice; the Study Agreement and the dormitory Rental Agreement follow after payment is received.
  7. The applicant arranges a Latvian visa or residence permit if required, then travels to Jelgava in time for the registration week stated in the Acceptance Letter.

English test waiver

Proof of English proficiency is not required if the applicant already obtained their secondary or higher education in the language of instruction of the chosen study programme, or if they obtained secondary education in an EU, European Economic Area, or Swiss school where the leaving certificate itself records a foreign-language proficiency of at least CEFR B2.
