Admission at a glance

Beijing Normal University is a national university in Beijing administered directly by the Ministry of Education, widely known in China for education, psychology, and teacher training, with 40 majors open to international undergraduates. The bachelor's degree programme is taught entirely in Chinese: most majors require an HSK Level 5 certificate scoring at least 180, while the Chinese as a Second Language and the Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages majors accept HSK Level 4 at the same score. In the most recently published cycle, the online application window for the bachelor's degree programme ran from 15 November to 15 March, with a 500 CNY non refundable application fee. Required documents include a notarised high school diploma and transcripts, a China Scholastic Competency Assessment report, a teacher's recommendation letter, a handwritten personal statement, a passport copy and a certificate of no criminal record. Tuition is 24,000 CNY a year for humanities and social science majors and 27,700 CNY a year for science, engineering and arts majors. Separately, BNU runs a wide range of English taught master's and doctoral programmes, including a full English taught Business School PhD programme; applicants to these submit an IELTS score of around 6.0 or a TOEFL iBT score of around 80, though some specific programmes state a higher figure, and are exempt if their previous degree was itself taught in English. The master's degree application window in the most recently published cycle ran from 15 November to 10 March, with Chinese Government Scholarship applicants facing an earlier deadline of 25 January.

There is no separate English test for the bachelor's degree programme.
