Admission at a glance
Tongji University is a national university in Shanghai with particular strength in architecture, civil engineering, transportation and design, and a long history of academic exchange with Germany. Its International Students Office publishes separate enrolment guides for bachelor's, master's and doctoral applicants each year, alongside guides tied to specific scholarships such as the Tongji University and Bank of China Global Talent Scholarship and the Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship. In the most recently published cycle, self funded and Tongji University International Student Excellence Scholarship applicants for a spring start could apply from 10 January to 20 March, while Chinese Government Scholarship and self funded doctoral applicants for the main cohort applied from 25 October to 20 December. Applicants to English taught undergraduate tracks need an IELTS certificate of at least 6.5 or a TOEFL iBT certificate of at least 85; postgraduate programmes generally ask for a lower figure set by the department, while Chinese taught programmes ask for HSK Level 5 with a score of at least 180 instead, waived for those whose prior degree was itself taught in Chinese. Undergraduate tuition is 35,000 CNY a year, plus a compulsory 800 CNY a year accident and hospitalisation insurance premium paid at registration; other programmes are billed according to the major catalog. The application fee is 600 CNY, paid online and non refundable.
