The Kemitraan Negara Berkembang (KNB), or Developing Country Partnership, Scholarship is run by Indonesia's Directorate General of Higher Education, Research and Technology, funding bachelor's, master's and doctoral study at around twenty partner Indonesian universities for students from developing countries across Asia, the Pacific, South America, Africa and Eastern Europe. It began in 1992 tied to the Non-Aligned Movement and was opened to all developing countries in 2002. Fields span the humanities, engineering, social sciences, natural sciences and education, though the specific programmes on offer differ from one partner university to the next. Age limits apply by level: 25 for bachelor's applicants, who need a completed high school qualification; 35 for master's applicants, who need a completed bachelor's degree; and 40 for doctoral applicants, who need a completed master's degree and a recommendation letter from a prospective supervisor at a partner university. English test requirements also rise with level: IBT TOEFL 80, IELTS 6.0 or TOEIC 700 for bachelor's and master's applicants, and IBT TOEFL 90 or IELTS 7.0 for doctoral applicants. Applicants cannot already hold the degree level they are applying for. Maximum funded duration is 8 semesters for a bachelor's degree, 4 semesters for a master's degree and 6 semesters for a doctorate, with a possible 2-semester extension for doctoral candidates on a case by case basis. A compulsory one-year Indonesian language course precedes the degree itself, since teaching is in Indonesian. Applicants cannot bring dependants: the scholarship is calculated to support only the student. The application route runs through the applicant's own country: candidates download an invitation letter from the KNB website, take it to their nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate for a mandatory recommendation letter, then complete the online application; a university-level selection process, which may include an online interview, decides the outcome, and results are announced through the KNB website and the Indonesian embassy network.
