Mauritius teaches university programmes mainly in English. At the public University of Mauritius, founded in 1965, international undergraduates pay block fees of USD 6,000 a year for science and technology programmes and USD 5,000 for other programmes in 2026/2027, and postgraduate yearly fees range from USD 2,000 to USD 6,000. International undergraduates from mainland Africa or from Asian developing countries such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, China and Indonesia receive a university scholarship covering 50% of the block fee, except in Medicine, the Foundation programme and the Data Science dual degree. Applications for the August 2026 intake, with a USD 50 application fee, were due by 10 April 2026, and dates for August 2027 have not yet been published.
The Passport and Immigration Office's guidelines, dated September 2026, set out the student entry and residence permit. Applications are made online through the National Electronic Licensing System. Students provide their passport pages and photograph, the institution's letter of offer and their letter of acceptance, a police character certificate less than six months old, a sponsor letter if they are not self-funded, proof of accommodation and medical reports including blood tests and a chest X-ray, with additional tests for students from listed countries such as Bangladesh, India and Nepal. They must show certified bank statements or an attestation with a closing balance of at least MUR 150,000, and after the first year proof of at least Rs 150,000 in a local bank account for each year of study. The entry permit is valid for six months from issue, the application is processed within 14 working days once complete, and a residence permit follows after documents are checked and medical clearance is given. Medical tests must be repeated within 14 days of arrival.
Full-time students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week. After graduation, foreign students who have completed at least an undergraduate degree at a tertiary institution in Mauritius can be employed on a Young Professional Occupation Permit, valid for up to three years, if the employer applies within six months of the publication of results and the job is in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, fintech, robotics, financial services or information technology.
