Scholarships to Study in Japan (2027) for International Students

The Japanese government's MEXT (Monbukagakusho) scholarship is the largest national scheme, running since 1954 across several categories including undergraduate, research student and Young Leaders Program places, applied for either through a Japanese embassy or consulate abroad or through a host university. JASSO, the Japan Student Services Organization, separately administers the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for privately financed international students and exchange scholarships tied to specific inter-university agreements. Individual universities also run their own tuition waivers and stipends, and local governments and private foundations fund smaller, often region or field specific, scholarships; none of these are designed to cover a student's full costs on their own, so most students combine one or more of them with personal or family funding.
