Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Study in Japan under Agreement) 2026

JASSO's Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Study in Japan under Agreement) funds a short-term study period in Japan, from 8 days up to one year, for students who are already accepted at a Japanese university, graduate school, junior college, college of technology or professional training college under a formal student exchange agreement, or a similar arrangement, between that school and the student's home institution. It is a mobility scholarship, not a degree scholarship: students remain enrolled at their home institution throughout and are expected to return and complete their studies there afterward. Eligible applicants must come from a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan, hold or qualify for a Student visa, show they do not otherwise have the financial means to study in Japan, and have a strong academic and personal record at their home school. A student already receiving more than JPY 80,000 a month in total from other scholarships intended for study in Japan is not eligible. The scholarship pays JPY 80,000 a month for the length of the exchange stay; it does not cover tuition, travel or any other cost, and any tuition arrangement is whatever the two schools agreed under their exchange agreement, not something JASSO sets. There is no application directly from the student to JASSO: only the Japanese host school can put a name forward, after the student has already been accepted through the exchange arrangement with their home school, and the selection method, required documents and timing differ from one host school to the next.
