Denmark Student Visa (2027): Requirements, Proof of Funds, Fee, Processing Time

What you need

A valid passport with all pages available for upload. Proof of admission to a full time higher education programme in Denmark approved by a state authority; SIRI receives many admissions automatically from the institution, or the applicant is given a case order ID to use when applying online. Documentation that the applicant can support themselves during their stay, for example a bank statement, a scholarship letter or similar, showing disposable funds of DKK 7,426 a month (2026 level), capped at DKK 89,112 for a 12 month permit; this is waived if the tuition fee for a complete programme has already been paid in full. For applicants under 18: a declaration of parental consent and a birth certificate. For an accompanying spouse, registered or cohabiting partner, or children under 18 living at home on a state approved programme: proof of the relationship and the family member's own proof of funds at the same monthly rate; rules tightened for family of students on non-state-approved programmes from 2 May 2025.

How to apply

1. Get admitted to a full time, state approved higher education programme in Denmark and receive a case order ID or online admission confirmation.
2. Apply online at nyidanmark.dk, or through a Danish mission abroad where online application is not available, and pay the DKK 3,060 fee.
3. Upload the required documents, including passport pages and proof of the ability to support yourself, unless this is waived because tuition for a complete programme is already paid in full.
4. Book and attend a biometrics appointment to have a photo and fingerprints taken, at a Danish mission or, if visa exempt, after arrival in Denmark.
5. Wait for a decision; SIRI's normal processing time is 2 months, extended to up to 3 months if more information is needed.
6. Once granted, follow the registration steps set out in the decision letter.

Why applications are refused

An application can be refused when the applicant is not admitted to a full time programme approved by a state authority, when required documents such as passport pages or, for minors, parental consent are missing, or when proof of sufficient funds is missing where it is required and not otherwise waived. A permit already granted can be revoked or not extended for working more hours than the permit allows, for receiving public benefits, or for being away from the registered Danish address for more than six consecutive months.
