Requirements

Bachelor's degree

Applicants need a completed senior high school education, a valid passport, and either an HSK Level 4 or above certificate for Chinese medium programmes or a TOEFL iBT 80, TOEFL Essentials 8, or IELTS 6.0 result for English medium programmes, unless exempt as a native English speaker or prior graduate of an English medium school.

Master's and PhD

A relevant bachelor's degree, or master's degree for PhD applicants, plus HSK Level 4 with a score of at least 180 for Chinese medium programmes, or the same English test standard as undergraduate applicants for English medium programmes.

Documents

Passport copy, high school diploma and transcripts or degree certificate and transcripts for graduate applicants, an HSK or English test report as required by the programme's language of instruction, financial certification or a bank statement showing at least 5,000 US dollars, and a physical examination report completed within the previous six months.

How to apply

  1. Decide whether to apply to a Chinese medium or English medium programme, since the language requirement differs.
  2. Apply online within the published window for the Autumn semester, which has historically opened around October of the preceding year and run through to June.
  3. Pay the 800 CNY non refundable application fee within seven days of submitting the application.
  4. Submit transcripts, the required language test or HSK report, financial certification and a physical examination report.
  5. Wait for the admission decision from the International Students Education College.
  6. Apply for the JW201 or JW202 form and an X1 student visa before travelling to China.

English test waiver

For English medium programmes, Wuhan University asks for TOEFL iBT 80 or above, TOEFL Essentials 8 or above, or IELTS 6.0 or above; native English speakers and applicants whose prior degree was taught in English are exempt. Chinese medium graduate programmes instead ask for HSK Level 4 with a score of at least 180; Chinese medium undergraduate applicants are assessed on Chinese ability separately rather than against a fixed English score.
