Kyoto University is one of Japan's oldest and most research-intensive national universities. Its main route for English-taught undergraduate admission is Kyoto iUP, a 4.5-year programme combining a six-month Japanese-language preparatory course with four years of degree study, admitting once a year for an October start.

Kyoto University charges the standard national rate: JPY 535,800 a year in tuition and a JPY 282,000 admission fee, the same for Japanese and international students. Kyoto iUP's own application fee is JPY 9,800 (plus a JPY 650 payment processing charge), lower than the university's general JPY 17,000 undergraduate examination fee. The university states that all Kyoto iUP students receive some level of admission and tuition fee waiver, with a preparatory-course monthly allowance of up to JPY 120,000 for a share of each cohort funded through the MEXT scholarship.
