Hokkaido University is a national research university in Sapporo and one of Japan's former imperial universities. Its Modern Japanese Studies Program (MJSP) is a 4.5-year bachelor's degree, half taught in Japanese and half in English, combining a six-month intensive Japanese course with four years of degree study.

Hokkaido University charges the standard national rate: JPY 535,800 a year in tuition and a JPY 282,000 admission (enrollment) fee for the Bachelor's degree course, the same for Japanese and international students; the Intensive Japanese Course that precedes it charges JPY 181,200 a semester in tuition and waives the admission fee. The Modern Japanese Studies Program's own application fee is JPY 5,000 for the Bachelor's degree route, lower than the university's general undergraduate examination fee, and is waived for applicants entering only the Intensive Japanese Course. The university states that students starting in the cycle covered by this record will have their enrollment and tuition fees fully waived, with continuing students able to apply for partial or full waivers based on academic performance.
