Requirements

Bachelor's degree

Applicants need a secondary school diploma and, for Chinese taught majors, an HSK certificate at the level set by the hosting school: Level 4 for Chinese Language and International Chinese Studies majors, Level 5 for most other Chinese taught majors, and Level 6 for School of Communication majors, each with a score of at least 180. English taught programmes, mainly in the Business School, ask for IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 85 or Cambridge English B2, waived for native English speakers.

Master's and PhD

Requirements are set by the hosting school and department. English taught postgraduate programmes ask for the same IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge English minimum as undergraduate English taught programmes; Chinese taught postgraduate programmes ask for an HSK certificate at the level the department sets.

Documents

Secondary school diploma and transcripts, a passport copy, an HSK certificate for Chinese taught programmes or an IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge English certificate for English taught programmes, and a personal statement. Applications go through the online portal at lxsapply.ecnu.edu.cn.

How to apply

  1. Register on ECNU's application portal (lxsapply.ecnu.edu.cn) and choose a Chinese taught or English taught programme.
  2. Upload the required documents before the relevant deadline: scholarship deadlines fall earlier in the cycle, self funded applicants apply latest.
  3. Pay the 800 CNY application fee.
  4. Wait for the admission decision from the hosting school.
  5. Self funded students pay tuition before 31 July of the entry year; scholarship students follow the instructions in their award letter.
  6. Apply for the JW202 form and student visa once admitted.

English test waiver

Cambridge English at B2 or above is accepted in place of IELTS or TOEFL, and native English speakers are exempt. Chinese taught programmes ask for HSK Level 4 (Chinese language and School of International Chinese Studies majors), Level 5 (most other Chinese taught majors) or Level 6 (School of Communication), each with a minimum score of 180.
