The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program is a nine-month, non-degree exchange funded by the US Department of State and run through the Institute of International Education, in partnership with US Embassies and Fulbright Commissions in more than 50 countries, including Bangladesh through the US Embassy in Dhaka. Selected teaching assistants live in the United States and teach their native language, in Bangladesh's case Bengali, to American and international students at a host college or university, while also taking up to two courses a semester on a tuition-free or audited basis and improving their own English proficiency. Eligible applicants must be Bangladeshi citizens residing in Bangladesh at the time of application, working as teachers of English or a closely related field such as American studies, English literature or Bengali language instruction, with no more than seven years of university-level teaching experience, at least a four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited Bangladeshi university, and English proficiency demonstrated by a TOEFL score of at least 80 or an IELTS score of at least 6.5. There are no renewals; the program runs for one academic year only. Funding from host institutions covers tuition and fee waivers for coursework, and a monthly stipend that US institutions set according to Department of State guidelines, typically USD 500 to 1,000 depending on whether housing is separately provided; the Department of State separately covers health insurance and program enrichment activities. The US Embassy in Dhaka's call for the 2027-28 program closed 30 August 2026; interested applicants should watch bd.usembassy.gov for the next announcement.
