Scholarships to Study in China (2027) for International Students

China runs one of the world's largest systems of higher education for international students, admitted mainly through each university's own international office rather than one national portal. Most bachelor's degrees are taught in Chinese and assessed through the HSK test, while a smaller but growing number of English taught programmes ask for IELTS or TOEFL instead, and the main intake for both is September.

The Chinese Government Scholarship, administered by the China Scholarship Council through the Study in China portal, is the main national award, covering tuition, accommodation or a housing subsidy, and a monthly stipend for bachelor's, master's and doctoral students, admitted either through a Chinese embassy under its Type A channel or directly through a university under its Type B channel. Provincial and city governments run their own awards, such as the Beijing Government Scholarship and the Shanghai Government Scholarship, open only to students studying in that province or city. Most universities in this project's research also run their own named scholarships, covering anything from a partial tuition waiver to full tuition plus a living allowance, applied for separately from the Chinese Government Scholarship.
