Heinrich Boll Foundation Scholarship 2027: Deadline, Eligibility, Benefits

The Heinrich Boll Foundation, closely associated with Germany's Green Party, runs a scholarship programme open to international students who have completed their first degree outside Germany and are about to start a master's programme there, as well as international PhD candidates who completed their previous degree abroad and are about to begin doctoral study in Germany. The foundation gives priority to applicants from countries on the OECD's Development Assistance Committee list who have not yet taken up residence in Germany at the time of application, alongside its usual selection criteria of academic merit and social or political engagement in line with the foundation's green and civil-society values. International applicants must demonstrate German language proficiency of at least B2 level or DSH1, since study and scholarship community life happen substantially in German even on English-taught programmes. Funding pays EUR 850 a month for master's students and EUR 1,200 a month plus a EUR 100 monthly mobility allowance for doctoral candidates, and can include tuition cover depending on the programme and the applicant's circumstances. The foundation runs two application windows a year: a spring window from 15 January to 1 March, for students due to start their German programme later that year, and a corresponding autumn window from 15 July to 1 September.
